Portfolio Performance Update: September

Welcome to your quarterly Portfolio performance update.

The July - September quarter increased the feeling that the 2023 market is a bit of a roller coaster - some fun times, some apprehension, some scary times but overall a good experience. The scary times this quarter were due to the re-emergence of talk of a US downturn. The fun times; for the third quarter in a row the markets have continued to flash positive performance overall and maintained strong year to date gains.

There were a few things that created the negative noise last quarter with the big one being the US housing market. It’s down in the dumps due to high interest rates and housing demand dropped to its lowest level since 1996, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. This is mostly due to owners not wanting to sell and losing their lower mortgage rate, meaning there isn’t much inventory even for those looking to buy. Looking ahead the Fed has signaled that interest rates will stay elevated, so its potential that the US will see mortgage rates hit 8% (for some borrowers, they already have). It might take a blow to the job market for the Fed to finally relax rates, which would make mortgages drop for the lucky ones who keep their jobs.

Across US stock markets the Dow Jones has been flexing with a 0.59% uptick, landing at 33,604.65. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 wasn't far behind, boasting a 0.63% rise to 4,335.66.

In other assets, Crude Oil took a tiny tumble, down by 0.53%. Overall, Bitcoin experienced fluctuations throughout the July to September quarter of 2023, with its value ranging between $44,000 to $51,000. The cryptocurrency saw both highs and lows but managed to maintain its position within this range.

In this rollercoaster of market highs and lows, keeping your investments diversified is the name of the game. Remember, it's not about timing the market; it's about time in the market.
